Make a French Press with Domestique
Share
Equipment List
- French Press Brewer--4 Cup (double recipe for an 8 cup/34oz French Press)
- Fresh Coffee Beans (27g)
- Grinder
- Filtered Water (400g)
- Kettle
- Wooden Spoon or Coffee Paddle
- Scale
- Timer
Average Brew Time: 4 minutes
Step 1
Preheat the press, including the plunger, with hot water and then empty. Meanwhile, grind your 27g of coffee on a coarse setting– it should be about the consistency of kosher salt.
- Be sure your coffee is ground evenly, so that all grounds extract at the same pace.
Step 2
Let your water boil and then rest to 200 degrees. Pour your ground coffee into the press and gently shake to level the grounds.
- Boiling hot water can scorch the coffee and affect the taste. It’s best to pour water right before or right after it boils.
- We recommend a 1:15 ratio for this brew method, so 25g of coffee to 400g of water.
Step 3
Start your timer and add water in a circular motion, wetting all of the grounds, until the press is half full. Pause for the bloom.
- This process of Blooming is wetting the grounds before pouring the rest of the water to let the coffee release some of its volatile gasses (namely CO2) and ensures that your grounds will be evenly extracted when you pour in the rest of the water.
Step 4
30 seconds in, gently stir the grounds with a spoon.
Step 5
Evenly pour water to the top of the press and add the lid, gently resting the plunger on the grounds. Don’t press down!
Step 6
When your timer reads 4 minutes, slowly push the plunger all the way down.
Step 7
Pour immediately to prevent over-extraction. Enjoy!
- Leaving the coffee in the grounds too long causes over-extraction, which results in a bitter taste.
- Thoroughly clean your french press after each use to avoid old coffee stuck in the filter that will affect the taste.
